Campaign Platform
This 2021 election is critical for Oak Island. Our community faces complex issues, many of which will impact all who live and vacation here. Exponential growth; protecting our coastline, wetlands, and tree canopies; stormwater management and paid parking are but a few. Resolving these and future issues requires capable leadership, strong relationships and clear priorities, the core of my campaign platform for the Town of Oak Island.
Leadership
I will bring to the position of mayor a wealth of knowledge and experience working with individuals and teams to achieve sustainable results. I believe in a group process. Democracy is a form of government wherein our founding fathers intended to operate in the open, actively engaging citizens as participants. We have an abundance of expertise within our community that will bring new ideas and fresh approaches to the issues before us. I will work diligently to preserve our culture while managing growth and giving necessary foresight to the issues we face to ensure our community and its citizens and thrive.
Relationships
We may be an island, but it was never intended we function in isolation. We must strengthen, restore, and build new positive working relationships and partnerships that are central to a healthy community. We must work cooperatively with our citizens, businesses and the elected officials at the county and state levels if we’re to succeed. We have much to learn from other coastal towns who have successfully met the very same challenges we now face. We must bond as a community to build a bright future for all.
Priorities
To begin a journey without a destination may be adventurous but it’s neither effective nor efficient for managing our Town. Planning primarily through the annual budgeting process is short-sighted and insufficient. We must establish efforts to look and plan into the future to ensure staffing levels are sufficient, our infrastructure is safe and up to date, our facilities and other resources keep pace with demands and our codes are enforced. We must have the courage to invest in responsible coastal preservation measures, protect our natural resources, especially those that negatively impact stormwater flooding, and broaden our economic development to lessen our dependency on tourism. While tourism is important to our coastal town, the citizens of Oak Island’s needs are every bit so. We need a skilled mayor and council with foresight, the ability to work together to develop and execute plans and who are invested in achieving better outcomes for our Town.
